The Templar Legacy by Steve Berry

I found The Templar Legacy to be an interesting read, it starts with a bang and doesn’t really let up until its conclusion. Fans of Dan Brown’s The DaVinci Code may appreciate the well researched locales intermingled with the fast paced storyline. In fact, often while reading through this novel, it felt almost as if Steve Berry was utilizing the formula that Dan Brown applied in his books. Mind you however, that is purely conjecture, as I have yet to read any of Steve Berry’s previous works.
For the most part, the characters were well done: Although occasionally overdone and a perhaps a bit superfluous. The book centers around a retired field agent, now living in Europe and operating a small book store. He gets swept back into the action after his former boss (and current friend) gets mugged by a strange individual. Similar to The DaVinci Code, we then see him get swept into a race to solve the mysteries left behind by the Knights Templar, before the foes chasing them can overcome them.
The ending of the story left me a little disappointed, it seemed almost a blatant attempt to generate controversy in the media. However, unlike The DaVinci Code, which presented an idea and the facts surrounding it, but left the actual conclusion to the reader, The Templar Legacy hits you over the head with its theory and leaves no room to devise your own theory.
Anyway, if you enjoyed Dan Brown’s stories, this will be a decent read for you, if not you may wish to pass.
