Ender’s Game

Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card
My review
rating: 5 of 5 stars
This was a great read. I’d easily consider it one of the best Sci-Fi books that I’ve read. It became a little morally preachy near the end, but the majority of the book was an enthralling read.
I’d definitely recommend this book to any sci-fi fan.

Chronicles of the Black Company

Chronicles of The Black Company by Glen Cook
My review
rating: 5 of 5 stars
Completely enjoyed this trilogy. About a quarter of the way into it, I found that I was having trouble putting it down. A great sign of a great book.
Raw, visceral and compelling characters. I can’t wait to read the other books in this series (providing that I can find them).
Grave Surprise

Grave Surprise by Charlaine Harris
My review
rating: 3 of 5 stars
Was a decent read, though I did not find the characters as well developed as in her other books. Harper seems to have a lot less spunk and passion than Sookie, maybe this has to do with her back story being a lot darker.
Though that being said, I found a lot of the back story repetitious and I hate to say it a bit boring. I found myself glossing over it a bit while reading.
I think the character/setting could have promise, but I think Charlaine needs to focus more on the story than the back story. Perhaps the subsequent books will move more in this direction

Greek Chicken and Lemon Soup with Orzo

Courtesy of Williams-Sonoma, this soup makes a great spring soup. I’ve always been a fan of lemon/chicken soup, and this surely does not disappoint. A lovely fiesta of flavour, this soup will have you enjoying every last drop in your bowl.

Next by Michael Crichton

I normally enjoy a Michael Crichton novel, relishing escaping into the thrilling almost science fiction of some of his earlier works such as: Jurassic Park, The Lost World
, Timeline
, Sphere
, and Congo
. However, this one left me a bit dizzy, trying to piece together the separate, unrelated view points into a cohesive plot line. It tries to come off like the movie Snatch, separate seemingly unconnected view points that over the course of the story show a relation that heightens each individual story, but falls short of that goal.
Instead it reads more like a collection of author notes on varying elements of genetics and bio-engineering pieced together to try and represent the author’s views on the topic. The pieces that are there are fairly well written, but a number of the characters come off as shallow and poorly represented. I also found that a number of the story arcs weren’t closed to my satisfaction and left me wondering what the point of that arc in general was.
If you’re curious about genetics or bio-engineering, you may thoroughly enjoy reading the author’s view points in this fictional representation, otherwise you may find this to be a waste of your time.
Wizard’s First Rule by Terry Goodkind

I will admit that I’m a bit behind the times here. This book was published in 1994 and is the first book in the Epic Fantasy series “Sword of Truth” and is now the source material of a new network Drama called The Legend Of The Seeker. That said, having resumed my unmitigated hunger for new books to read, I thought now an appropriate time to tackle this series.
I must say, I was quite impressed character development and timing that Terry has shown in this book and I can definitely see why it is rated as one of the must read fantasy series. While a little disappointed with the conclusion, I thoroughly enjoyed following Richard, Khalan, Zedd and the rest of the cast in their journey across the three lands.
Tuxedo Shopping

Jennifer, I, and my future father in law went and began looking at Tuxedos for the first time today. We went to a small place in Peterborough called Imperial Styles.
One thing I liked about this place is that they actually have Tuxedos in stock that you can try on, where as places like Moore’s fit you with a suit.
I think we’ll end up dealing with this place as they were open and honest with us from the beginning, as well I will be able to get exactly the Tux that I want, rather than depending on a suit fitting and a catalog for my big day.
Most likely Jennifer and I will go back for our first official fitting in September. Will post pictures then if I have them
Just over 4 months to go
Jul 22nd
Just over 4 months to go until Jennifer and I’s wedding and we couldn’t be more excited.
We’re getting married at a nice little resort in Keene Ontario on December 6th called Elmhirst Resort.
We’re planning a weekend event with a BBQ and a wagon ride on the Friday, the wedding on Saturday and a brunch on Sunday.
Should be fun. I am looking forward to it
The Value Of Compassion
Apr 8th
Easter weekend, my initial plans were to start off the weekend on Friday by traveling to visit my future in-laws, then to visit my mother in Apsley, and then back to Penetang to spend some time with my father’s family. Was excited looking forward to spending a relaxing weekend with the family
However, things stacked up against me on Friday and the weekend got off to a bad start. First I stopped by Timmy’s before hitting the road. The drive through was crazy busy, and it took about 20-30 minutes to get my coffee. Then when I finally hit the road, shortly outside of Barrie I hit a nasty snow storm. I shuffled my way along with the traffic through the snow storm and after a few miles was out in the clear, thinking I was now going to make up some time. Though lo’ and behold, that wasn’t to happen as not long after, I was suddenly jarred and my car would no longer switch gears (a thing I later learned to be called limp-home mode, basically the car got slammed into second gear). I pulled over and after putting the car in park, could no longer get it going. I called CAA and they towed me to Orillia, only to realize that it was Good Friday and nothing was open.
